American Muslim Community Center (AMCC) is pleased to announce the start of a weekend school for the children in the community.
The classes start on Sunday, February 1, 2009.

 Schedule

The classes will be held between 11:00 am and 12:30 pm on Sunday at Pax Christi Catholic Community Center in Eden Prairie. Directions are given at the end of this document. Children older than 5 years are eligible to enroll.

 Classes

The following classes will be offered:

·        Language* (5-8 yrs)

·        Language* (8 years +)

·        Islamic Studies (5-8 yrs)

·        Islamic Studies (8yrs +)

·        * Quran recitation classes are also being considered

*Currently only Urdu language is offered. More languages may be added on demand.

 Approach

The weekend school will be inclusive of all sections of the Twin Cities Muslim community regardless of national origin, religious school of thought or language.

 

A well planned curriculum in a child- friendly language and format will be followed.

After a thorough survey of various books published for this purpose, we selected The Weekend Learning series (www.weekendlearning.com) for the Islamic Studies curriculum. This is a newly developed curriculum authored by Dr. Mansur Ahmed and Husain Nuri.

 

The lessons introduce the concepts about Allah, His prophets, other noble people and how they lived their lives. The lessons require students to constantly refer to the Qur’an for relevant surahs, thus embedding the concept in their minds that Quran is a book for understanding and following. 

 

Each book typically comprises of about 29 short lessons. Each lesson can be completed in one class and the book can be completed in one academic year.

 

We are fortunate that twin-cities based author of the curriculum, Dr. Mansur Ahmed has agreed to be a consultant to the AMCC weekend school.  The details of the curriculum and sample lessons can be downloaded from: www.weekendlearning.com/WeekendLearning%20Curriculum%20and%20Sample.pdf

 Administration

While we do have some people with teaching experience involved with the school administration, it will be run by volunteers. As mentioned before, expert input and guidance will be available from the author of the Islamic Studies course books. This school will not serve as a day care and parents will be encouraged to get involved with the school activities.  An adult discussion group is also under consideration during the classes.

 Finances

The school will be run free of charge. However, parents will have to bear some cost of the course books, stationary etc.

Please register with the school by emailing us at info@amccn.org or calling at 952-393-6271. All interested parents and children are requested to join us for the inaugural classes on Sunday, February 1st 2009 at 11:00 am to complete the registration process.

Friday Prayers Change

Please note that the AMCC Friday prayers are being suspended starting January 2nd 2009, due to low attendance. We regreat any inconvenience caused due to this. There are multiple alternatives for Friday prayers available near Eden Prairie including the Shady Oak Road Masjid, The Islamic Center on Baker Road (near hwy 62), The Burnsville Masjid and Masjid Rahman. In case the ned to revive the AMCC Friday prayers arises, we will Inshallah do so. All our other activities will Inshallah continue as usual. Thanks for all your support.
